8TB Samsung SSD Briefly Appears on Amazon for $900

One of the easiest ways to speed up a laptop or desktop PC is to install an SSD, but hard drives remain the more budget-friendly option if you require terabytes of storage.

Multi-terabyte SSD pricing is set to fall, however, if a recently, yet quickly removed Amazon listing is to be believed.

As Tom's Hardware reports, someone at Amazon pushed the button to reveal Samsung is launching an 8TB 870 QVO SSD in a couple of months for $900.

When an 8TB hard drive can be purchased for les than $200, that pricing certainly seems high.

However, the 870 QVO costs $112.50 per terabyte, which is on a par with some of the cheapest 1TB SSDs on the market today.

In other words, the premium for massive SSDs is disappearing.

There's expected to be four Samsung 870 QVO SSDs launching, with the 1TB model also briefly appearing for $130 and available from June 30.

2TB and 4TB models are sure to appear, too, with the 8TB model not being made available until August 24.

The one negative against these drives is the fact they use of quad-level cell (QLC) flash memory, which stores four-bits-per-cell.

This has a knock-on effect in terms of the durability of the drive, which decreases the more bits there are packed into each cell.

Write speeds are also impacted negatively, but then, how important those factors are dependd on your intended usage.

Used as a second drive for storing all your media files, these SSDs are going to be fine.

It's only when you start performing huge write workloads on a daily basis that QLC flash endurance should be of concern.

Samsung has already shipped SSDs packing four-bits-per-cell in the 860 QVO range and in capacities up to 4TB.

With those drives it tinkered with the cell arrangement, DRAM, controller, and the firmware to offer performance on a par with three-bits-per-cell alternatives while retaining endurance.

Expect the same from the 870 QVO drives and a good warranty to boot.
