HP Targets MacBook Lovers With New Envy, ZBook Laptops

(The upcoming ZBook Studio from HP)

HP’s latest Windows laptops have been designed to win over Generation Z and MacBook lovers.

On Thursday, the PC vendor introduced several new products for its Envy line and ZBook family, which will start going on sale in May and into the summer.

With the new notebooks, HP is seeking to appeal to younger consumers, who need a fast and mobile PC to work remotely, and to also create content and videos to post on social media.

The company is also trying to pull away MacBook fans from Apple by introducing two ZBook models that offer powerhouse features in a sleek package.

The Envy 15

If you want a stylish-looking laptop at midrange prices, HP’s Envy line may have what you’re looking for.

The company has refreshed last year’s models, while adding a new design: the Envy 15.

The new 15.6-inch laptop sits between the smaller Envy 13 and the larger Envy 17, so it’s ideal for users looking for a little more screen space without overdoing it.

The new product also sports the Envy's familiar sleek aluminum casing.

One of the laptop’s big selling points is the addition of a 4K OLED display.

HP says the screen will be ideal for video bloggers, who want to see accurate picture colors during the editing process.

Buyers can also upgrade the 4K panel to a touch screen.

On the chip front, the Envy 15 can be maxed out with an Intel 10th Generation Core i9 H-Series processor.

The laptop also contains enough room to add an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card in the event you want to do some gaming or 3D project rendering.

In terms of storage, the Envy 15 can come with 1TB or 2TB of PCIe NVMe SSD for fast loading times.

Other perks include the ability to connect up to three displays to the laptop, a fast Wi-Fi 6 radio, and up to two USB-C Thunderbolt 3 ports.

There’s also an SD card reader on the side.

An HP provided comparison.

HP says it can fit all this technology inside the laptop at a weight of around 4.7 pounds.

Expect the battery life to reach up to 16.5 hours, depending on the configuration.

To further appeal to Generation Z, HP says you can easily share images or videos you take on your smartphone with the laptop, thanks to the company’s QuickDrop app.

What a maxed-out HP Envy 15 will cost isn’t clear.

But the company says the product will start at $1,349 when it goes on sale in June on HP.com.

The product will also be available at other retailers including Amazon.

The Rest of the Envy Pack

HP’s Envy-line changes don't stop at the traditional laptops.

The company has also created a convertible version of the Envy 15, which can flip into a tablet thanks to the 360-degree hinge.

The Envy x360 15 was introduced last year, but the company has refreshed the model with Intel’s 10th Generation chips and AMD’s Ryzen 4000-series processors.

The convertible model may be less powerful than the Core i9 Envy 15, with storage limited to either 256GB or 512GB of SSD.

But on the plus side, the product is cheaper.

It’ll start at $699 when configured with an AMD processor, and $849 when outfitted with an Intel chip.

You’ll find it up for sale in early May.

HP is introducing a similar refresh to the Envy 13 and Envy x360 13, updating them with the latest silicon from Intel and AMD.

You can also now get the Envy 13 with a 4K display.

The Envy 13 will be available in early May at $999, while the Envy x360 13 will start at $699.

The Envy 13 now has thinner bezels and a smaller footprint over the last generation.

Finally, there’s the Envy 17 for laptop buyers who want a 17.3-inch screen.

The product went on sale last week, starting at $1,099.

HP says it improved the model by upgrading it with Intel 10th Generation chips, and giving buyers the option for a 4K display.

The laptop is also slightly smaller than the earlier generation.

ZBook Studio/Create laptops

New ZBooks

For power users willing to spend more, HP has tried to design a MacBook Pro killer with two new products: the ZBook Create and the ZBook Studio.

The upcoming 15-inch laptops are meant for architects, graphic artists, and product engineers who need a powerhouse PC that can run heavy-duty design programs at a fast clip.

The same laptops are also thin and light, weighing in at only 4 pounds.

Compared with last generation's models, the new ZBooks are about 22 percent smaller.

They’ve also been built with an aluminum chassis and keyboards that match the layout on a MacBook.

“This is a zero compromise notebook,” HP product director Anu Herranen told journalists in a briefing.

“This is the world’s most powerful mobile workstation per cubic centimeter.”

The two models are nearly identical.

The only difference is that the Studio version uses Nvidia’s dedicated workstation Quadro graphics cards while the Create version is fitted with Nvidia GeForce RTX gaming-graphics technology.

You can also configure them with an Intel Core i9 or Xeon processor for truly fast performance.

Other features include a UHD (3,840-by-2,160-pixel) display, a 17.5-hour battery life, and powerful built-in speakers above the keyboard.

The laptop also uses a vapor-cooling system so you can run the hardware at maximum performance with overheating.

And thanks to the graphics cards, you're getting a laptop capable of running virtual reality applications, whether for VR creation or playback.

The new ZBooks won’t be on sale until August, and no pricing was shared yet.
