Huawei Launches P40 Pro+ Android Flagship Without Any Google Apps

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei has launched its latest flagship smartphones, the P40, the P40 Pro, and the P40 Pro+.

Much like its other flagship, the Mate 30 Pro, the P40 series touts some impressive specs, but is challenged by the fact that it will launch without access to Google’s suite of apps or the Play Store.

Both the P40 Pro+ and the P40 Pro have 6.58-inch curved OLED displays with a 2,460-by-1,200 resolution.

The P40 Pro+ uses a 120Hz display, while the P40 Pro is only 90Hz.

In the top left corner of the screen (similar in style to that of the Samsung Galaxy S10) is a small dual-camera cutout for a 32MP selfie camera and a 3D infrared sensor for face-unlock.

On the back of the P40 Pro+, housed in a rectangular camera bump, is a penta-camera setup.

This consists of a 50MP main sensor, a 40MP wide angle lens, two 8MP telephoto lenses (one for 10x optical zoom and one for 3x), and a time-of-flight sensor.

The P40 Pro, meanwhile, has a quad-camera array consisting of a 50MP main sensor, a 40MP ultra-wide, a 12MP telephoto lens, and a 3D time-of-flight sensor.

Both Pro handsets include a 4,200mAh battery capable of fast-charging with a 40W wired charger (wireless charging is supported), and 8GB of RAM, but where the P40 has 256GB of internal storage the Pro+ has 512GB.

The standard P40 has similar, but scaled-down, specs.

This includes a 6.1-inch display and only 128GB of internal storage paired with 8GB of RAM and a 3,800mAh battery.

There's a triple-camera setup consisting of a 50MP primary sensor, a 16MP ultra-wide, and an 8MP telephoto lens.

The P40 has an IP53 water-resistance rating, meaning it will be protected from splashes but cannot be submerged.

Huawei is including some impressive artificial intelligence capabilities alongside the camera hardware, such as the ability to remove passersby in photos and eliminate reflection.

Whether or not they work as well as claimed remains to be seen.

And of course, it's unlikely we'll see these phones in the US because of the ongoing trade war between President Trump and China.

The P40 and P40 Pro phones will be available from April 7, priced at €799 ($875) and €999 ($1095), respectively, while the P40 Pro+ will launch in June at €1399 ($1500).
