(Credit: Microsoft) Old-school gamers rejoice: We’re getting a new Battletoads game next month.
The revival arrives on Aug.
20 for the Xbox One, Windows PCs, and Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft announced Friday—29 years after the original Battletoads game came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1991.
The classic beat 'em up title lets you take control of a toad warrior from outer space, who’s on a mission to defeat the evil Dark Queen and her minions.
The game’s original developer, Rare, followed up the title with a few other entries.
But after 1994, the Battletoads series remained pretty dormant until 2018 when Microsoft teased a modern revival of the game.
In a trailer for the new Battletoads, what stands out is the game's 90s Saturday morning cartoon feel.
Expect the title to pack plenty of beat em up action, which will involve 3-person "couch" co-op play.
In addition, the game is filled with cutscenes of the characters Zitz, Rash, and Pimple, cracking jokes through voice actors.
According to Microsoft, some “award-winning writers” penned the game’s script.

But the lead developer will be a UK-based company called Dlala Studios.
The original Battletoads game, while popular, was also notoriously hard to beat.
So to make the game accessible to all, Dlala is going to include various difficulty settings.
“Just like before, you’ll be faced with hugely varied challenges as you play, including new vehicle sections and even some puzzle-solving this time around,” Microsoft says.
The game will also be available on Steam.
If you're an Xbox Game Pass member you can pre-install the game today.
To do so, Microsoft says: “Search for Battletoads on your Xbox or the Xbox App for PC (beta), or download the Xbox Game Pass mobile app for Apple or Android and pre-install to your console or PC.”
