4 Litecoin

What is Litecoin (LTC)? Litecoin (LTC) is a cryptocurrency designed to provide fast, secure and low-cost payments by leveraging the unique properties of blockchain technology.

The cryptocurrency was created based on the Bitcoin protocol, but differs in terms of how the hashing algorithm, maximum capitalisation, block transaction times and some other factors are used.

Litecoin has a block time of only 2.5 minutes, and extremely low transaction fees, making it suitable for microtransactions and point-of-sale payments.

Litecoin was launched through an open source client on GitHub on 7 October 2011, and the Litecoin network went live five days later on 13 October 2011.

Since then, it has grown in both usage and acceptance among traders, making it one of the top ten cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation for most of its existence.

The cryptocurrency was created by Charlie Lee, a former Google employee, who intended Litecoin to be a "lite version of Bitcoin", as it has many of the same properties as Bitcoin, but with a lighter weight.

Behind Bitcoin, Litecoin is the second most popular pure cryptocurrency on the market.

This success can largely be attributed to its simplicity and the benefits its services offer to the public.

As of January 2021, Litecoin is one of the most widely accepted cryptocurrencies, with more than 2,000 merchants and shops now accepting LTC worldwide.

Its main advantage is speed and cost-effectiveness.

Litecoin transactions are typically confirmed within minutes, and transaction fees are almost negligible.

This makes it an attractive alternative to Bitcoin in developing countries, where transaction fees can be the deciding factor in deciding which cryptocurrency to support.
