RapidX Carbon Line Gaming and Lifestyle Chair Review

RapidX's Carbon Line of gaming chairs finds a good compromise between the almost overly capacious AKRacing Max Gaming Chair and the smaller SecretLab Titan.

It splits the difference of capacity between the two with a weight limit of 350 pounds, and while its padding isn't quite as dense and its faux leather isn't quite as supple as the Titan's, it still feels very sturdy and comfortable.

If you're a larger-than-average gamer looking for a comfortable, capable gaming chair, the $399.99 Carbon Line is a good pick.

Materials

Like the DXRacer Racing Series OH/RV001, the Carbon Line combines polyurethane (PU) leather with carbon fiber-textured vinyl for its covering.

While we can't attest to the long-term sturdiness of either material, both seem strong and fairly pliant, though we find the pleather on AKRacing's Max chair to feel a bit more supple, and the PU leather on the SecretLab Titan chair to be the most dense-feeling and leather-like of the group we've tested so far.

The material covers dense PU padding on the seat and parts of the back of the chair.

The surface where your back rests against the chair is padded a bit lightly, with an empty cavity apparently behind the padding, but the sides of the back of the chair and the structure up to the headrest are all stuffed with PU foam and provide a strong, solid build.

We still prefer the SecretLab Titan's abundance of cold-cure foam padding, but the Carbon Line has plenty of support in all the right places.

And, if the back of the chair doesn't offer quite enough support for your back on its own, the included lumbar support cushion can help.

The Carbon Line gaming chair is available in four colors: black with white accents, black with bright green accents, black with brown accents, and gray with black accents.

Capacity

The Carbon Line isn't quite as spacious as the AKRacing Max Gaming Chair, but it can still support most larger users with a maximum weight capacity of 350 pounds and a generous 18.5-inch-deep seat.

The Max can handle up to 400 pounds and features a deeper 20.3-inch seat, so it's worth considering if you prefer the space.

For my 250-pound frame, I found the Carbon Line chair comfortable to use, while I felt like I was swimming in the Max.

Assembly

Like every other gaming chair we've tested, the Carbon ships unassembled.

You can put it together on your own, but you'll have an easier time if you can get some help.

It's split into two main parts: the seat with armrests pre-attached and the back.

Besides those halves, you also need to connect the upper base, pneumatic tube, lower base, five castors, and some plastic covers for the sides.

Remove the bolts from the sides of the back of the chair and place those sides against the two metal brackets on the seat.

Screw the bolts in to connect the two chair halves and flip them over.

Bolt the upper base onto the underside of the seat, then attach the castors and pneumatic cylinder to the lower base.

Place the upper base on the cylinder and screw the plastic covers onto the sides of the back of the chair to obscure the metal brackets connecting the back to the seat.

After that, the chair is ready.

Adjustments

Like every gaming chair we've tested so far, the Carbon Line offers lots of adjustment options.

You can change the chair's height with the pneumatic cylinder in the base by pulling on the right paddle under the seat, and freely tilt back up to 15 degrees unless you wish to lock the height and tilt angle with the left paddle.

The lever behind the right armrest also lets you recline the back of the chair from a slightly forward angle of 85 degrees to a very generous lean back of 155 degrees.

If you want a chair that can unfold completely flat, you'll want to look at the AKRacing Max Chair and its 180-degree recline, but we don't necessarily recommend it; leaning back that far on any chair feels very precarious.

As it is, you should lock the tilt mechanism on the Carbon Line chair before reclining anyway, because freely tilting while leaning back that far feels like you're inviting disaster.

The dense rubber armrests are also adjustable, and can be raised and lowered by pulling the lever on the outside of each arm.

The armrests can also slide forward and backward in securely clicking increments, but they don't lock in place with buttons like the other chairs we've tested.

Fortunately, the click stops hold the armrests' positions in place without locking.

You can also twist the armrests left and right by 15 degrees, adjusting the yaw while keeping them flat.

Conclusions

The RapidX Carbon Line gaming chair is a large, well-made piece of furniture with dense padding and nicely supple faux leather, with a generous capacity for larger users.

We're impressed by its build quality, which feels a bit more solid and sturdy than the DXRacer Racing Series and AKRacing Max chairs.

It's a good pick if you want a quality gaming chair, but if you weigh less than 290 pounds we recommend the SecretLab Titan instead.

It has the same $400 price tag as the Carbon Line, but its cold-cure foam padding is a bit more generous and dense, and its PU leather cover feels a bit more supple, which is why it earns our Editors' Choice.
